My colleagues and I at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany are interested in having a look at some big specimens of N. lowii. We would like to collect odors from the pitchers and take some samples of the white secretion. We are having some problem in finding healthy looking N. lowii in botanical gardens. Any of you collectors / Nep enthusiast that have a prime specimen we could have a look at. Preferably in Europe...

Hi Marcus, N. lowii is a very rare species, and not many growers in the world are so lucky to have huge adult specimens...maybe if you give some more details (your name, the professor or team you work for or with, the target of the experiment etc) you're more likely to find one of those lucky people...otherwise it's like coming and say "My name is Marcello, I work for the FBI, can you send me 10.000 dollars? I wanna make sure there are no fake banconotes around"...
We are going to Borneo (Mulu) in November, but need to check somethings before we go....preferably. We are interested in how the plant attracts its visitors, and how it coax the visitors to take a "dump" in the pitcher. We have a strong feeling that N. lowii is probably a "shrew toilet" rather than a "bird toilet". We suspect that the plant is producing a rodent territorial marking pheromone that triggers a aggressive behavior from the attracted rodents which leads to urine and feces release.
Interesting hypothesis, do please update us on your findings, maybe it be positive or negative. Unfortunately I live in an area that is almost impossible to grow Lowiis (well unless I spend money for cooling a greenhouse).
I wonder, as most of the mentioned Lowii keepers are outside the US, maybe you can just have samples of what you need sent to you as opposed to going to say Germany or SriLanka! Then again maybe you are concerned about contamination, container, etc.
Good luck and have fun with your study!

thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.

vidyut: Photobucket has ruined this place and many other forum archives with years and years of photos worth referencing now blurred. Priceless information hostage to services once free, begging for adoption, arbitrarily monetized.
