I have a hanging basket of Nepenthes, under a 20W fluorescent light, which I don't think is enough. They're under a household, single bulb ceiling fixture, so I can't up the lightage, or get another light up there, but I might be able to use battery powered LED lighting to increase the light. Would this work? If so, how often would it go through batteries etc. and how long would it last? I can get a round fixture for 5$ with 5 "white" LED's in it, each about 1 1/2 inch diameter. How many of these would I need?
I was going to order some from Dave, but unfortunately my plans changed when I couldn't find a loophole in the college rules about electrical outlets lmao. I believe LED's are the future, and I think in about a decade or two they'll phase out T5's. Right now, I don't believe it's worth it to buy them unless you seriously want to cut down on heat. They're very expensive and can't compete with fluorescent lighting, in my opinion, unless you have several of those sexy grow master 5's Did I mention everything looks like dark and radioactive under them? Unless you like purple lol. I wouldn't use them if you want to look at your plants all the time.
They are expensive, but keep in mind it's an investment for the future. Just like solar panels. Over the course of a decade, think of the money you will have saved on replacement lamps, electricity, and cooling (for some people). When it's time to replace them, there will be even better LED's and probably cheaper! I get excited talking about lighting, but really LED's aren't practical for lighting an N. ventricosa (or whatever). Don't you live in NZ? You can probably grow it very well outside.

Right... Of course I am. Horticultural LED's are useful, a $5 LED fixture is not meant to be used for growing plants and it it's useless. It would be meant for accent lighting in a residential setting or something along those lines, and that's the only benefit kath is going to get out of it: accent lighting. It's not going to be considered supplemental lighting for the plant because it's not the right type of LED to benefit the plant.
thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.

vidyut: Photobucket has ruined this place and many other forum archives with years and years of photos worth referencing now blurred. Priceless information hostage to services once free, begging for adoption, arbitrarily monetized.
