Dear Singaporeans, There is a good chance that we'll be staying for 9 months in Singapore starting around August 2006. I'd be happy to get to know the Singaporean CP scene, maybe we can even plan for a small CPTropics-forum gathering or do some hiking or nursery hopping together! You can also give me suggestions for a "to do" list in Singapore, what CP relevant places to visit etc. If anyone has a room/studio for rent or some connections (and be it just a good website) for housing in Singapore, please let me know - I'd be grateful. Thanks and hope to see you soon! Volker
Wow I just discovered this, never ventured anywhere else cept the Nep board. Darn this timing! I will be away starting from August this year. You coming for holiday or what? 9 months is a pretty long time. I got bored after 3 months, and I've stayed here 17 years.
Anyway, people come to S'pore for 1) the shopping (orchard road, holland village and some other IT places like Funan and Sim Lim, a great place to buy electronics) and 2) FOOD! Try some local chicken rice or ais kacang at the super cheap hawker centres. I think there might be an IT convention or two during that period as well.
Now the plant scene. Sorta growing, the people here go nursery trips and have gatherings quite often. They just organized one especially for a 'guest of honour' from Taiwan and Brunei. I can tell the forum you are coming. You have to visit the botanic garden (coolhouse has some Neps), First Sunday of every month has a orchid sale there.
About the rental, there are loads of ads every day in the classified section of the newspaper. www.singaporepropertiesonline.com/ Their website (I never even knew they had one till now).
Sad to say there isnt much nature left in Singapore. But there are still small pockets of nepenthes habitat around. Maybe we can have a nepenthes habitat tour among the CP growers in Singapore. I dont know where they are but some of the folks i know might know.
When exactly u will be coming? 9th of August is our National Day or Independence Day depending where u come from. You might want to see how Singaporeans celebrate their national day.
I will find out more for u after my exams which will end somewhere early in May. If you are interested in natural places other than nepenthes, u can check out this website www.wildsingapore.com/index.html . Hope this helps for now.

Hi Jason and Prana, Thank you for your messages. I also almost missed them, since I mostly use the 'recent 40 messages' function, which is sometimes not enough to view everything written in this forum. Maybe I should hire someone to read it for me, hehehe. My wife is doing a research project in Singapore and as a book-writer myself I don't care where we are on the globe - I surely don't mind having a new scenery from time to time. We don't have the specific dates yet, but I will keep you updated. Thanks also for the websites, exactly the stuff I was looking for. Volker
Drop by the largest community of Singaporean CPers here: www.greenculturesg.com/. ;D Nine months is good...enough time for you to go collection visiting. Not that we grow a fantastic variety of CPs here but you get to see how badly D. capensis grows in Singapore!
Hey Prana, Cindy and all you other Indonesians, Malaysians and Singaporeans... I may be heading over to your "Fine" City later this year. All depends if my old business partner (lives in Singapore) sends me some good news. So it'll be nice to meet you all in person, and say hello to the rest of the Indonesian/Spore/Malysian CP crowd.
Ok, I am in Singapore now, somewhere in the HDB Canyons around LRT Pending. We are still extremely busy organizing our lives, but maybe later in November we should have a small Singaporean forum member gathering and go in the woods or better in the 'Neps' together. How about that? Volker

thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.

mylesg: i havent checked in here for a while, why does it seem all the CP forums have lost their once strong activity? the trade/sale section used to be so active and now its a ghost town. where is everybody hanging out these days for a strong online CP community?

vidyut: hey mylesg. glad to hear that. Love this forum. Facebook can't organize knowledge like this. Will participate as much as I can.

vidyut: Photobucket has ruined this place and many other forum archives with years and years of photos worth referencing now blurred. Priceless information hostage to services once free, begging for adoption, arbitrarily monetized.
