Hello all, I just recently got back into CPs after losing my entire Nepenthes collection (roughly 150 different species and hybrids) to a disaster. It has taken me a handful of years to have the money and time to jump back in but I am ready.
Last time I had a collection this forum was full of life and I was sad to see how quiet it has become. Hoping that by posting regularly and showing the progress of my collection we can get a small tight knit community back and from there who knows.
I am acquiring what is available but also just what I want as space is limited. For now this is highland Nepenthes and Heliamphora only. The market is pretty crazy when it comes to the rarer species and hybrids especially my favorite toothy ones. Will be importing with Wistuba come spring time, buying from native exotics, cooks, predatory plants, carnivero, petflytrap and eBay. I know there are a few other sources but most of those seem to offer only the basic plants.
Luckily being setup in a basement there is no need to cool the room and I will play it by ear if heating is needed but the light combined with the closed tent seems to be bringing temp up enough during the day cycle to give me the night drops highlanders love. I have a humidifier set to keep room between 60 and 65% and a small RO unit hooked up to a 5 gallon bucket with float valve. The light is an Indagrow 420 watt unit. Should be plenty for my needs until expansion inevitably comes lol
Here is what I have so far with about ten more plants onthe way. This is less than a week old so plants are still settling in. Thanks for stopping by and please feel free to ask any questions or if you are a guest please sign up!
Thanks! I have already blown through my allotted funds that I had saved up for this highland bounce back haha The current retail market has nearly tripled from 2012 for many of the rarer plants so it didnt go as far as i had envisioned I have most of the highland species and hybrids at the top of my list either ordered or on reserve for spring import. villosa and inermis along with famous hybrids like xtrusmadiensis and predator seem to be in incredibly short supply. They can't elude me forever though!
little update now that I have some pitchers inflating. Unfortunately The growthpoint was snapped in shipment on this ventricosa x hamata. Curious how long it typically takes a young plant like this to activate a new growth point and get back on track? IMG_1618 by myles geishecker, on Flickr
started some drosera seed today in the basement. this setup is purely temporary and in the corner of the basement. put up a scrap of white poly i had laying around not exactly a work of art! ill setup a nice display for these on the first floor later when they get sticky and beautiful
yup, there is no end in sight! I am having so much fun
my first order of nepenthes seed arrived, got them sown into rinsed sphagnum. first mix is supposedly lowii, reinwardtiana(HL), edwardsiana 'Green', fusca, veitchii(HL). the second mix is supposedly hirsuta 'Black', reinwardtiana(HL), edwardsiana 'Gold', fusca, veitchii(HL) IMG_1645 by myles geishecker, on Flickr IMG_1646 by myles geishecker, on Flickr IMG_1647 by myles geishecker, on Flickr
and my ventricosa that lost its growth point due to a frost is sending out at least 4 basals simultaneously. should I allow all to grow or select 2 so the growth rate isn't slowed too much? IMG_1650 by myles geishecker, on Flickr
thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.

mylesg: i havent checked in here for a while, why does it seem all the CP forums have lost their once strong activity? the trade/sale section used to be so active and now its a ghost town. where is everybody hanging out these days for a strong online CP community?

vidyut: hey mylesg. glad to hear that. Love this forum. Facebook can't organize knowledge like this. Will participate as much as I can.

vidyut: Photobucket has ruined this place and many other forum archives with years and years of photos worth referencing now blurred. Priceless information hostage to services once free, begging for adoption, arbitrarily monetized.
