Hi, please anybody here tested side by side pine/cypress bark for growing nepenthes ? I have heard pine bark is little toxic for CP and retard their growth. Here in our country is cypress bark not available except something like this ( which is called cypress bark, but i think it is cypress wood, not the pure bark ) www.teraechis.cz/images/Teraechis/Substraty/baleni_cypris.jpg
That looks like cypress mulch. It's what we buy over here in the Stares from garden centers. I think it should be usable. I like the "premium" stuff they sell here. It's golden and color and comes from Florida. I myself use a small % in my mix. I have a mix with many ingredients, at the moment, including several other wood-based items. I also take out all those giant chunks, which are wood, as you said. I have a friend who uses 80% cypress mulch and 20% lfs with no problems and Sunbelle uses a large % in their mixes. I am sure others will chime in, but it looks okay to me.
Super old thread huh? well, whatever.... I'll still chime in with my thoughts
I've heard that cypress specifically can be somewhat toxic and is not what you want to use (though I've never tried it myself). What you really want is fir bark (like Douglas fir) or pine bark (such as ponderosa pine). These are what are typically used in "orchid bark". I actually called the company of the product I was thinking of buying to ask them what specifically was in their product, and after a little poking and prodding they were able to tell me.
As for only using the bark, and not the wood: one of the bags I bought several years ago had quite a lot of the wood in it, and not just the bark. However, I have had nothing but good results with it; so I don't think that matters much.
I use pine bark on my nepenthes, mixed with peat, spag and sand, its fine, however if i use a tray the pot gets nailed by cynobacteria and i tried it with a U.calycifida and killed it within 2-3weeks, in saying this i use dendrobium mix (pre made) which contains about 60-70% pine bark, and it is fine, so i guess it depends on the methods of cleaning, but in general for neps its fine
The mix we find most suitable is sphagnum peat moss mixed with Corbitt NO FLOAT pure Cypress mulch (we don't use other brands of Cypress mulch because they may contain pressure treated woods and be poisonous to Neps), sponge rock, fir bark, charcoal and dried long fiber sphagnum moss. Some plants like more drainage, others like the mix more muddy, so the mix will vary.

thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.
