Sockholm, you definitely should grow Regia. Your cool-growing plants grow so well, I'm sure you would have great success!
-oh and it's Quogue with a Q. Pronounced like Kwahge, kinda like Hauge. It's an ol' nickname... ;D

Twoton, Regia's just get really dewey... at least if they're happy. Cool temps and bright, but not burning lights is what does it

btw.. all pics are of the same clone of the 'Big Easy' cultivar except the one with the coiled leaf and the ones with the forked leaf.. those are from my Regia species plants.

After reviewing hundreds of Drosera regia, I have yet to find much of a difference between D. regia and D. 'Big Easy'...

I have been growing both the Big Easy and regular regias for a while now and have not seen much of a difference between these plants either. Both are easy to grow here and often reach 18+ inches long.

I suspect that the Big Easy and other regias look similar when grown under favorable conditons. The Big Easy might be more tolerant of less than ideal conditons though. Many people in warmer climates have said they only succeed with the Big Easy clone. So perhaps we only see a difference under more challenging growing conditions. That's just a theory. The conditions here are cool, so I have no way of testing this. Any thoughts anyone?

So as you can see it is about cultivation and not apperance that distinguishes this Cultivar.

I have been growing D. Regia since the Summer of 03 and the 'Big Easy' since the Fall of 05

In NY, the Summer's get hot so I can say with confidence that the Big Easy tolerates the heat Much better!

Hasn't flowered for me yet, but neither has the Regia.

The Big Easy never went dormant yet while the Regia does every year.
The Big Easy does slow down and put out smaller leaves in the dead of Winter though.

My Big Easy regularly puts out leaves more than twice the size of the above description.

Never tried the leaf in water propagation trick, but I can tell you that root cuttings sprout quite easily for me with both the Regia and the Big Easy.

I think 'Big Easy' could simply be that way because of the TC protocol used to progate it. All the plants from Marie's Orchids at the 2000 convention in San Fransico were later named as 'Big Easy'.

However, I have yet to see one flower... But I think it might a nutrient issue. My plants did go dormant for the first time this winter past, so I am thinking perhaps the TC protocol is finally starting to wear off... Maybe I'll get some flowers soon, in a year or two.

That's quite interesting Dave, I guess if all of those plants that were renamed were from the same clone That would be ok?
If not, that would create quite abit of confusion and be generally shady.

I certainly agree with the nutrient issue, wish I could feed em more in the wintertime, they do seem to be very hungry plants.
They get quite a bit to eat in the warmer months being full of moths with some houseflys, craneflys and whatnot.

As for the reason the Big Easy is so easy? I've heard of a lower-level population of Regias in the wild and I've always thought perhaps this might be where they originated from.

I've noticed the bigger and older Regias get, the more they will collapse when the heat of August kicks in.

The Big Easy suffers barely a setback when the Regia dies back and produces smaller leaves.

Last year I AC'ed the area they are in to around 75 and they liked that much more even with the lower humidity.

Well, they do appear to all be the same clone, but I don't know for certain. Could be all from the same batch of seed. There is only one location for D. regia, but there are two sections within it. I don't know how much diversity is displayed by the species, but I imagine it isn't much...
