Leilani, I do get the impression from your posts that it seems that you have a set of ideals for this naming and everyone else is 'against' you. Maybe you are just playing 'devil's advocate'? Anyway, you are misquoting us a bit or just not properly understanding our point of view. Yes, Sunbelle and us do share a similar view on this naming process. That is correct. However we are definitely opposed to a cultivar group type of registration as that is what the ICPS registration is about. In our opinion, these 2 words should not go together as a cultivar should be a distinctly exceptional sibling(s) from a grex. We do not agree with the situation where there has been lumping of plants that look similar but have a different lineage into a so called cultivar group. Talk about confusing the issue!
The truth is that I am relatively new to these issues and am trying to figure them out for my self so that when I start naming greges and selecting cultivars I can proceed with the confidence that my own practices are consistent and reasonably coordinated with those of other breeders such as yourself.
I have, to a large extent, been playing ‘devils advocate’ and trying not to let conversation stop without forcing participants to think about the issues from as many angles as I can come up with. If I don’t do this then, conversation dies and the conference experiment fails. I love to argue and sometimes drift off into an argument strictly over logical form when the real focus should be on the pragmatic logic of nursery operations. I hope you and sunbelle will recognize this as just a personality trait and know that I don’t take myself that seriously. I am looking forward, in the next few weeks, to the time when I can attempt a summary of these ideas. To this end I cannot let things go at a simple expression like ‘We don’t need detailed descriptions when pictures will do a better job’ and feel it necessary to probe further and ask “What do you mean when you say ‘detailed’? and “How many pictures and of what exactly?”
Please forgive me should I mistakenly suggest that you believe something that in fact you do not. I appreciate being corrected and apologize for any misrepresentation. Your input is indispensable in these conversations and the more I can keep you talking the better i will understand your positions.
With regard to this Topic I can say that I agree with you in that I think the ‘cultivar-group’ concept is a poor one. What lead me here from the grex description thread was that the idea of a ‘typical’ grex specimen is very similar to the way a cultiver-group is defined. In the grex is would be the plant with the highest coincidence of the common characteristics of its siblings and in a cultivar of it’s group.

plantguyty1: Does anybody need pollen? I have N. Miranda it's the first time it flowered for me so I do not know if its sterile or a good candidate. Is there anybody with an active female that would like to give my pollen a shot?
