I think not many people own a real light meter, plus visibile light (as in lux) is only part of the light that is actually interesting for the plant. And those PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) measuring devices are quite expensive...
Therefore: Do you think there is a way to use a digital camera to calculate the strength of a shade cloth for example - thus allowing us to compare our shading measures?
My idea would be to put the camera on a fixed aperture and check the suggested shutter speed at a certain daytime on a cloudless day pointing on a white piece of paper angled at 45 degrees, then walk into the covered/shaded growing area and check it again. Maybe even a formula can be created to define 'no cover' as 100% and the covered version as a percentage of such. We could just talk shutter speeds, if we all had the same camera.
You can use any camera to measure light as you suggest. You just have to settle upon a protocol. Unfortunately, it is not very accurate. A single full-step in exposure (like from 1/30 to 1/60 second) represents the difference between 100% sun and 50% shade. But it is a good approximate indicator. I use this on my FAQ to help people decide if their lighting is even remotely acceptable for their first-time VFT purchases: www.sarracenia.com/faq/faq3400.html

plantguyty1: Does anybody need pollen? I have N. Miranda it's the first time it flowered for me so I do not know if its sterile or a good candidate. Is there anybody with an active female that would like to give my pollen a shot?

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.
