I've watched participation here dwindle over the past year, and I've been told by several people that Facebook is the cause - taking 90% of the traffic from most other CP discussion groups. If that's true, I think its a huge shame to have most of the discussion funneled into one big social sinkhole. There are many in this community who won't have anything to do with Facebook, myself included, and I've always felt it was a blessing to have this as a refuge from Facebook.
So now I wonder - is this group doomed to go defunct through inactivity, as others have? Does anyone care?
There are many cons from the traffic moving to facebook but a few pros. The biggest pro is that it seems that it consolidates a lot of nepenthes growers from many countries. For example, instead of going onto cpuk to contact the UK growers, they all seem to be in the facebook groups. The dilemma is that facebook groups are not archivable so it'll be very difficult to ever come back to past discussions. It's gained so much momentum though that I don't know if it can be curved at this point.
Oh, I know there's no changing course now. The Black Hole is going to eat everything. But its such a shame, since a lot of user content is hidden from view inside FB's walled garden, so if you want to see any of it, you have to join. That is so in violation of the principle of the Open Web, and its not good for us.

Yeah I think it's a shame that the forum I suffering from the lack of traffic . The Facebook groups generally seem to be picture galleries and not much else ( I only get feeds from highland Nepenthes group can't speak for any others).
It is a rather sad state of affairs. When I first started getting back into Nepenthes after a hiatus, the archives of this forum were invaluable -- such a wealth of cultivation knowledge & wisdom, gleaned from some of the best growers in the hobby, past and present. Facebook's archive function is weak by comparison, and the format of Facebook just doesn't lend itself to the sorts of discussion you can have on a forum.
I am hopeful that facebook's continued sale of users information will drive some of the traffic back to forums like this. I deleted my facebook and will be posting my photos here and try to reignite the heartbeat. Maybe not enough people care enough to leave FB behind but heres to hoping!
The format of the forum is better than facebook for this type of long discussion. For quite some time we didn't post much on here because we were busy with other commitments. Now we have the time and we'll try to contribute more.
LOL - Sunbelle had a facebook account... then one day facebook locked me out of my own account. They wanted photo id in order to get back in. They have some nerve even asking for a photo id. I never got my facebook account back. Talk about a huge red flag.
Then, there's always stuff like this happening: "Facebook announced on Friday that the social network had exposed the private photos of millions of users without their permission.
photo ID is pretty high security to get access to your own social media page, red flag is right.
So, I haven't been on facebook or tried to log on for the past 3 years.
JUST TODAY I created a new account because all of our c.p. friends keep telling us about what's going on in the facebook groups, and I want to see too.
I made a new email, new personal facebook account and Sunbelle page, and uploaded some plant photos. While I am sending friend requests, I get a prompt to upload a photo clearly showing my face. There is no way around this prompt and I am locked out of my own account again. Again! I did a quick search online and read about how they have facial recognition programs.
This is the message: Upload A Photo Of Yourself To get back on Facebook, upload a photo that clearly shows your face. Make sure the photo is well-lit and isn't blurry. Don't include other people in the shot. We use this photo to help us check that this account belongs to you. We'll delete the photo once we've done this, and it will never appear on your profile.
Sorry, but no way am I going to support these companies who want a future technological totalitarian dystopia (I feel like I'm living in the film Minority Report!).
