Hi everyone, I am Aaron and I'm just a newbie in the forum
5 weeks ago, I bought a Nepenthes alata in cartimar. I bought for 450 pesos with about 6 medium sized pitchers. It is potted in a coconut shell. Many of its pitchers are dry and bruised and some of the tendrils at the end are dried. I repotted it in a much bigger hanging pot. I used peat, sand and some coconut fibers with small amounts of bark. Right now, most of the old pitchers are dead, but 2 new ones had grown already. It is producing a lot of leaves with tendrils in the end (are those the pitchers?). It's growth is kinda slow because it took 3 weeks for a singe tendril to grow and develop into a full pitcher. Are there any ways to speed its growth? And the new pitchers growing are much greener and smaller compared to its previous pitchers (It's pitchers are reddish green before). Any tips or secrets in growing Nepenthes? I've heard that they are the most easiest Nepenthes to grow.
I'll enumerate my comments below: a. Potting mix sounded okay, except the "sand", why did you think you needed to add sand? My potting mix is just Cocopeat and sometimes cocochips or coco fibers. Pot is plastic.
b. It's summer, try to water your newly potted plant daily, tap water is okay, watering at night is ideal. I actually have some water dish under the pot just to make sure the potting mix is always moist, specially during summer.
c. Do not make too many changes anymore. The plant was just repotted and is now in a new environment, so just let is settle down and get used to where it is now.
d. Yes they tend to pitcher slowly, most nepenthes actually are slow to pitcher, and if you look at the tendrils every day then it will be doubly slow. Also sometimes they do not really turn to pitchers, until they are good and ready.
Yes Alata is quite forgiving specially for us here in the City. My suggestion is do not try to take care of it too much, just make sure it is watered regularly.
There is no secret way to make them grow faster, except patience and giving them time. If they are happy where they are, they will grow and pitcher, if they are not happy, you will know.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry about the sand, I always add those in my potting mixes to add drainage (i use river sand though). Well now, the plant is still doing well, though you are right they are really slow to grow. Thanks for the advices!
Oh, and I'm looking for other CP's as well like sundews and other varieties of pitchers. Are there places in metro-manila to buy them? I only saw the nepenthes in cartimar once, and after that it was never sold again. Are they really that rare and hard to find?

plantguyty1: Does anybody need pollen? I have N. Miranda it's the first time it flowered for me so I do not know if its sterile or a good candidate. Is there anybody with an active female that would like to give my pollen a shot?

thatoneplantboi: Hey guys, I'm new to growing nepenthes, I'm getting a mini indoor greenhouse to grow them in. What kind of light should I use for them? Also, if you could provide a link to a product, it would be very much appreciated

borneo: Yes, they work superbly. But you don't need expensive lights, cheap ones work well too.
