Per my experience with this cross, I grow it in a slightly more open mix and give it shaded sun in the late morning and direct sun for a portion of the afternoon (seems counterintuitive, but that's just where the plant ended up). I let it dry out a bit between waterings, but it is exposed to rain. It does well for me in those conditions.
because im poor and lazy, I have misters for humidity and they double up for watering - this way I get them watered daily with no effort on my part. Even though my GH is very wet most of the time, I bet if I tried to stand my plants in water, they would all rot out. lol
You seem to grow seedlings really fast! it would take me a few months short of forever to get seedlings to that size
Yup, I got lucky on the nigra, I have a whole pile of these seedlings, all around 15 months old. It's one of the joys of growing from seed, you get some nice surprises along the way. This is a fast growing species, I'm looking forward to it getting bigger.
Morbus, feel free to hijack away! Ideally, we'd keep our Neps just damp all the time- but as you say, this needs daily watering. It's just not practical. So- it's a compromise. They sit in a little water in summer, then I'll keep them dry all winter.
I water my plants daily, so they hardly (when things go wrong) come close to drying but, I need to be careful in winter. anyway - I dont want to hijack this thread
Apis, Your Bario Veitchii look fantastic. Are you growing them in lowland conditions? Also, are they growing in sphagnum or is the sphagnum a top dressing? Good growing!
Yuter777: the carunculata x hamatas were released a while ago. There may be a couple of small ones still there if you are interested.
I have posted this pic before but this is N.(vent x sib) x hamata.
Dave, yes it is one of my favourites. We also have bellii crossed with [(veitchii x maxima) x veitchii], macfarlanei and talangensis x hamata growing on.
Christian, we are still working on it. We lent our camera to a friend on an o/s trip but now have it back and it is just a matter of finding the time.
"tentaculata" seedling, grown from wild-collected seed. This is SO not tentaculata...
Well, it so isN. nigra! Previously lumped under N. tentaculata.

It is simply related to cooler conditions result in more water staying in the soil for a longer time frame. Perhaps long enough to stress the roots. Like with Orchids, Nepenthes need a lot of oxygen to their roots all the time. Unlike Orchids, they never want the soil to actually dry, so it is more of a balancing act when watering Nepenthes.
Also, fungi generally like cooler conditions as well.
